Induced Lactation for Intended Parents
If you’re considering inducing lactation as an intended parent, you’re not alone. Surrogacy is one of the most common paths for parents I support in this process, and for good reason.
The longer timeline and relative stability of most surrogacy journeys can make it easier to prepare for lactation. In fact, the original protocols for inducing lactation were developed with intended parents in mind.
Why some intended parents choose induced lactation
Human milk provides important nutrition and immune support for your baby. It can also be a meaningful way to build connection, especially for parents who did not carry their baby during pregnancy.
For those who have experienced infertility, the ability to produce milk without pregnancy can feel especially powerful. For many, it’s not just about feeding, it’s also part of healing.
Planning your approach
Inducing lactation has evolved over the years, and we now have more flexible, personalized approaches than ever before.
Starting with a strong foundation matters. That includes understanding the basics and working with an IBCLC who has experience with induced lactation. This is a more complex feeding journey, and having expert guidance can make a big difference.
Planning for supplementation is also an important part of the process. While many parents are able to produce some milk, most will need to supplement with donor milk or formula to fully meet their baby’s needs.
In some cases, your gestational carrier may be open to providing milk for a period of time, which can help ease that transition. If that’s something you’re considering, we can talk through options together and find an approach that feels right for everyone involved.
