Relactation and Back to Breast

What is relactation?

Relactation is the process of starting your milk supply again after it’s slowed down or stopped, even if you didn’t breastfeed or chestfeed at the beginning. It can happen after days, weeks, or even months. Like many parts of feeding, it takes time, consistency, and the right kind of support.

Start with your “how”

It helps to look back at how you got here. Maybe breastfeeding wasn’t your plan at first. Or maybe challenges like pain, low milk supply, illness, lack of support, or emotional stress got in the way.

Understanding your “how” can help you see what’s changed or what still needs support. Sometimes that means working with an IBCLC, your healthcare provider, or a mental health professional before moving forward.

Now, your “why”

What’s bringing you back to lactation now?

Maybe you have more support. Maybe your baby is having trouble with formula, or you’re hoping to reconnect at the breast. Maybe you’re in a different place physically or emotionally than you were before.

Whatever your reason, it matters. A clear “why” can help guide you through the process.

What relactation looks like

Relactation is all about sending your body the signal to make milk again. That means frequent and effective breast stimulation and milk removal.

This might include pumping, hand expression, breastfeeding, or a combination. Some families also use a nursing supplementer to support feeding at the breast while building supply. We’ll find a plan that works for your life.

Galactagogues (certain medications, herbs, or supplements) can sometimes help. They’re not one size fits all, and they don’t replace regular milk removal. We’ll make sure anything you use is safe and appropriate for you by working with your physician in relation to medications.

What about back to breast?

Relactation focuses on milk production. Back to breast is about helping your baby return to the breast.

You might be working on one or both. Either way, it’s a gradual process that takes patience and support, but it can also be deeply rewarding. We’ll take it step by step in a way that feels manageable.

You don’t have to figure this out alone
