Induced Lactation
Explore what's possible.
Induced lactation makes it possible to create a milk supply and build a feeding relationship without having experienced pregnancy.
Whether you're an adoptive parent, intended parent, non-gestational parent, co-lactating partner, transgender woman, or simply exploring whether lactation is possible for you, LatchLine provides specialized virtual support from preparation through your feeding journey.
How Does Induced Lactation Work?
Your body can respond to the right signals, even when pregnancy isn't part of your story.
Lactation is driven by a combination of hormones, breast stimulation, and milk removal. During pregnancy, hormonal changes prepare the breasts for milk production. But pregnancy isn't the only way to stimulate the physiological processes involved in lactation.
With the right approach, some people can establish milk production through breast or nipple stimulation, regular milk removal, and (when appropriate) medical support. The process is highly individual, and the amount of milk produced can vary from person to person.
At LatchLine, we'll help you understand what's possible for your body, establish a plan that fits your goals and circumstances, and adjust that plan as your response develops.
01: Preparation
Build your foundation.
Before beginning stimulation, we'll look at your health history, medications, previous lactation experience, breast or chest surgery, timeline, feeding goals, and the circumstances surrounding your journey.
Together, we'll identify what preparation may be appropriate for you and what kind of support you'll need along the way.
The goal: Start with a plan that's informed by your body, circumstances, and goals.
02: Stimulation
Give your body the signal.
Regular breast or nipple stimulation and milk removal provide the signals that encourage the body to begin developing a milk supply.
Your plan may include hand expression, pumping, or other forms of breast stimulation depending on your circumstances and goals.
Consistency matters, but so does sustainability. We'll help you create a stimulation plan that is realistic for your life rather than simply giving you a schedule to follow.
The goal: Create consistent stimulation while protecting your comfort and wellbeing.
03: Milk Production
Give your supply time to develop.
Early milk production may begin gradually. You might notice changes before you're producing significant volumes, and progress can look different from one person to another.
We'll help you understand what changes to look for, how to monitor your progress, and how to adjust your approach when needed.
Some people establish a full milk supply, while others produce a partial supply. Both can be meaningful parts of a successful feeding relationship.
The goal: Support your body's response while keeping expectations realistic and your feeding goals at the center.
04: Feeding Relationship
Turn milk production into connection.
Induced lactation isn't only about how many ounces you produce.
It may be about nursing your baby, providing some breast milk alongside supplementation, building a breastfeeding relationship, sharing feeding with a partner, or creating a meaningful way to connect through feeding.
Your feeding relationship will continue to evolve long after milk production begins.
The goal: Create a feeding experience that works for you, your baby, and your family.
What Can You Expect?
There isn't one universal induced lactation timeline.
Some people begin noticing changes relatively quickly, while establishing a meaningful milk supply can take weeks or months. Your response may depend on factors such as your hormonal history, previous pregnancies or lactation, breast or chest surgery, medications, frequency of stimulation, and how much milk your body is able to produce.
You don't need to know exactly what your journey will look like before you begin.
That's what individualized lactation support is for.
We'll help you understand what may be realistic for your circumstances, identify milestones to watch for, and adjust your plan as your body responds.
